Since 2016, the enthusiasm for digital tablets has been somewhat moderate, both for brands and consumers. If fewer and fewer tablets are launched and purchased each year, their quality, on the other hand, continues to grow.

In terms of innovation, Apple remains the market leader. The brand has launched two new iPad models in 2017, and both have been very well received.

Samsung, the biggest competitor of Apple (in all areas), is not left behind. The Galaxy Tab S3, released in March 2017, will undoubtedly appeal to Android users.

Android, iPad or Windows?

The Apple iPad is considered the best tablet there is currently. Its iOS operating system makes its use instinctive and fast. Even if there are more Android tablets in circulation, the majority of developers are trying to create an iOS version of their programs, you will not run out of laptop deals applications!

Except for Samsung, Android tablets are cheaper than iPads. They are all the more attractive as their performance continues to improve.

The operating system of Windows tablets is not yet at the same level as its competitors. However, there is an advantage to getting a tablet of the brand, since you can use the same programs as on your PC and therefore switch from one to another without worry. In addition, most Windows tablets come with a keyboard, making them very practical hybrids.

Did you know that there is a fourth option? Amazon’s Fire tablet is based on the Android operating system and comes with pre-installed apps. However, you can only use Fire with apps available in the Amazon store, so its capabilities are limited.

1. Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

The Galaxy Tab S3 is by far the best Android tablet that has been launched this year. It’s the equivalent of an iPad but in Android. The problem ? A very high price that will discourage more than one, especially that the removable keyboard is not included with the tablet.

The Super AMOLED screen of the Galaxy Tab S3 has a resolution of 2048 x 1536 and beautiful colors, although it reflects a little too light to be totally perfect. The battery of this tablet particularly impressed us since it lasts until 12h and recharges in 2h30!

Amazon’s latest tablet is perfect for entertaining. It is inexpensive, well designed and has a good video resolution.

5. iPad 9.7 inches (2018)

The iPad Pro 9.7 inch 2018 is not perfect, it has a very good balance between price, design, and features.

It does not have a Retina display or the latest processor, but it does not detract from the fact that it is very pleasant to use.
The size of its screen lends itself well to games and movies. It is thin, light and you can take it anywhere with you without any problem. It brings together all the desired qualities for an iPad.

Moreover, it is the cheapest iPad in the range, it’s really the right compromise.

6. Apple iPad Pro 11in (2018)

The 11-inch iPad Pro is the best iPad Pro probably ever designed to date.
However, there is still a shadow on the board, indeed it is overpriced.
Unless you really need the features of the Smart Keyboard and the 120Hz display, we recommend you look at other, simpler models.

However, for artists or those who want to use the iPad Pro as a laptop, then this is the best option.

It has FaceID, a long battery life and a new Apple Pencil better than ever.

7. Samsung Galaxy Tab S4

In addition to being at the same price as its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab S4 does not change much. We are disappointed not to find the last processor.

Its large 10.5-inch screen rivals that of the iPad Pro, and the integration of DeX software, developed by Samsung gives it more power. Samsung’s goal is to replace your laptop.

This is probably one of the best Android tablets on the market, but it is still too expensive for what it is. Unless you are completely anti-Apple, then the 9.7 inch iPad (2018) is much better.

Why choose a tablet?

The tablets are particularly suitable for watching videos, playing video games, reading eBooks or surfing the internet. They also allow you to easily share photos or consult your social networks (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest …).

However, they are not recommended if you frequently need to take notes, or write documents, unless you buy a compatible keyboard.

If not for the Amazon Fire, you can install many applications on your tablet. Many are available for free on the App Store or Google Play, but some will cost you a few cents to tens of euros. At present, there are fewer applications available on Windows tablets than on other brands.
There are tablets of all sizes, some are slightly larger than your smartphone, others are A4. This is your personal preference. Remember, it’s best to choose an IPS, OLED or AMOLED display for TN displays with average image rendering.

WiFi & 4G

If you need to be connected to the internet even while on the move, prefer a tablet that you can use with a 3G or 4G SIM card (like for phones) to one that only connects to WiFi.

Keep in mind that tablets with the SIM card option are more expensive than others, and you will also need to subscribe to a special Data Internet subscription. If you only occasionally need the internet and there is no WiFi nearby, you can always turn your smartphone into a hotspot and use the data of your mobile subscription for your tablet.

All tablets are WiFi compatible and some are even compatible with the latest version (802.11ac).

USB, Micro-USB and “Lightning” cable

Apple likes to differentiate itself and offers exclusive (and expensive) accessories for its products. Thus, iPads are recharged only with the cable “lightning”.

If you misplace the one provided to you when you buy the tablet, you will have to pay 25 € minimum to get another one.

Android tablets or Windows on the other hand reloads with micro-USB cables, or USB Type-C. Some Windows tablets even have a standard USB port, which is very convenient since it also allows you to connect an external hard drive, a keyboard or a printer.

Hard disk

The storage capacity of your tablet’s hard drive is important, especially if it does not have a micro SD port.

Moreover, if the additional memory provided by a micro SD card is convenient (and inexpensive), know that some tablets do not allow you to install applications and you can only use it to store your files ( pictures, music tracks …).

Also note that the storage capacity advertised by tablet manufacturers is often misleading. For example, if a tablet is presented as having 8 GB of memory, there is actually only 5 GB of free since the operating system and pre-installed 4k tv applications are not counted.

Windows tablets are probably the worst on this subject, some display 64 GB of space while there is really only 23 GB usable!

Camera and battery

Strangely, cameras on tablets are often of lower quality than those installed on smartphones. So prefer your laptop to your tablet to take your shots.

More important than the photos, the battery. This is an important choice because nobody wants a tablet that turns off after 2 hours! According to our tests, iPads stand out with a battery that lasts until 10am even watching videos.
